Mrs. Rebecca J. Whittington, residing on south Washington street, died Saturday night at 11:45 o’clock after a lingering illness. A hardening of her arteries with other complications being the cause of her death. Mrs. Whittington, who was 76 years of age, has been failing for a couple years but her serious illness dates back only a couple weeks. The deceased was the wife of William Whittington, Sr., and besides her husband leaves seven children, R.L. Whittington of Bedford, Ia.; James T. of Emporia, Kan,; Mrs. Thomas J. Canine of Oxford, Ind.; Mrs. William Deere of Indianapolis; W.T., Charles and Walter, all of this city. A daughter, Mamie and a son, John D. died some years ago. The deceased was a daughter of Reese Davis, who in the early days was one of the most prominent Baptist divines in this section of the state and organized many of the Baptist churches of this community. The deceased had one brother, William J. Davis, who died in Tampa, Florida ten years ago. Among other bequests he endowed the family cemetery with a small farm and annuity for the upkeep of the cemetery and the family lot. The decedent was in fact and in truth “an old fashioned mother.” Everybody who knew her loved her. She was a white-haired, sweet-faced old lady always with a kind word for the children, grandchildren and friends all of whom will greatly miss her and the gatherings at her home. She and her husband had lived together more than sixty years. They moved to this city from their farm in Brown township about twelve years ago. W.F. Whittington was in California when learning of her serious illness and did not reach home until some hours after her death. The funeral will be held at the home Tuesday morning at 10 o’clock being conducted by Rev. J.F. Rake of the First Baptist Church. The interment will take place at the Freedom Church cemetery of which church Mrs. Whittington was the oldest in point of membership. -- thanks muches Sue :)
